SUMMARY:Orchestra of the Swan present: Tales of the City
DESCRIPTION:Tales of the City\nRossini The Barber of Seville\, Overture\nGershwin Rhapsody in Blue\nCopland Quiet City\nMozart Symphony No.38 ‘Prague’ \nConductor Rebecca Miller\nPiano Viv McLean\nTrumpet Hugh Davies\nCor Anglais Louise Braithwaite \nCities are the inspiration for this concert conducted by Rebecca Miller and featuring pianist Viv McLean as soloist. Rhapsody in Blue is possibly Gershwin’s most popular work and has become synonymous with the stylishly bustling New York City of the 1930s. Copland’s Quiet City is an introverted soundscape; a deserted metropolis depicted by plaintive jazz-influenced trumpet and a pale wash of strings. There is no doubt that Mozart had a particular affinity with the city of Prague; anecdotal evidence suggests he felt its inhabitants truly understood his music. Many of his major works received premieres there including Symphony No.38. \nSave 20% when booking for all three OOTS concerts at The Courtyard (excluding the Family Concert).

SUMMARY:The Fitzwilliam at Hay Chamber Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:“Shostakovitch Inspired!” \nThis exciting Music\, Words and Live Art event with music painter Maryleen Schiltkamp and the Fitzwilliam String Quartet promises to be a unique experience!  Maryleen will paint on canvas\, live on stage in response to the Fitzwilliam String Quartet’s performance of Shostakovich’s 10th String Quartet. The quartet will also play Shostakovich’s 11th String Quartet and there will be readings from the composer’s diaries and memoirs by Peter Florence\, Director of The Hay Festival.   Music painting is an exciting new performance art\, combining live music with artistic creations on canvas.  The live painting on stage will follow and literally illustrate the musical movement and shapes heard and the colour of sound. \nThe Fitzwilliam is now one of the longest established string quartets in the world and achieved international recognition as a result of its members’ personal friendship with Dmitri Shostakovich and their subsequent championing of his string quartets following his death. Shostakovich entrusted them with the Western premières of the last three quartets and they became the first ever group to perform and record all fifteen.

Paired with this is Mozart’s own chamber version of his remarkable Piano Concerto No.24\, one of only two concertos Mozart wrote in a minor key. Explosive\, dark and tragic\, Beethoven expressed his profound admiration for the work. \nTickets from £10 (free tickets for under-26s) – includes a cup of tea or coffee and a cake before the concert (from 3.30pm).

SUMMARY:Nicholas Daniels plays Strauss
DESCRIPTION:Ravel – Pavane pour une infante défunte\nStrauss – Oboe Concerto\, TrV 292\nStrauss – Metamorphosen\nRavel – Le Tombeau de Couperin \nMichael Seal – conductor\nNicholas Daniel – oboe \nWe welcome the City of Birmingham’s associate conductor\, Michael Seal – “one of the CBSO’s best-kept secrets” – to direct a concert that illustrates the differing ways two twentieth-century composers approached and portrayed death. As depressing as this may sound\, it makes for some of the most glorious music ever written – Ravel’s beautiful “evocation of a pavane that a little princess [infanta] might\, in former times\, have danced at the Spanish court” being a perfect example. Richard Strauss’ heart-rending Metamorphosen for twenty-three strings – an elegy for the destruction of culture\, written at the end of both the Second World War and the composer’s life (as was the Oboe Concerto) – though\, will be hard to surpass.

DESCRIPTION:A Brief History Of Music‘ takes in 600 years of musical history in 90 minutes! Beginning in the Middle Ages and ending up in the 20th century (and incorporating everything in between!) this fun and fast-moving show is a whistle-stop tour of Western musical history. SUMMARY:Clara Schumann - Prodigy\, Muse\, Virtuoso
DESCRIPTION:The concert has been designed to convey the story of Clara Schumann’s remarkable life in this the bi-centenary of her birth\, with acclaimed pianist Reiko Fujisawa and well-known actor and narrator Crawford Logan.  In words and music\, these artists will present a portrait of the woman who was\, at once\, a leading pianist of her day\, the wife of one great composer and the intimate friend of another\, mother of eight children\, composer and teacher. Her life was marked by tragedy and distinguished by a career which spanned more than sixty years. We see her now as a strikingly independent woman\, a woman of her time yet one who worked tirelessly against the grain of assumption and prejudice.  Reiko will perform works by Clara and Robert Schumann\, their contemporaries Chopin\, Liszt and Brahms and a celebrated movement from the ‘Pathétique’ Sonata by Beethoven\, a composer whose music made a profound impact upon Clara.  Tickets at £16 (students £8) on 01432 340555 or online.

SUMMARY:My Love She Mourneth: From Despair To Joy
DESCRIPTION:“My Love She Mourneth: From Despair To Joy”\nwith music by Byrd\, Cornysh\, Debussy\, Poulenc and Stanford\nA programme showcasing gems from the English Renaissance for men’s voices contrasted with 20th and 21st century works.  This includes compositions by four living composers and the premiere of a work written specially for the occasion. \nThe expansive and richly textured motets of William Byrd form the backbone of the programme which traces a typically Lenten theme: darkness to light\, despair to joy. Works in English from the likes of Matthew Martin and Charles Villiers Stanford\, alongside the impressionistic French composers Claude Debussy and Francis Poulenc\, explore the wide-ranging ways of writing for this combination of voices\, often considered solely an early music group. \nIncluding local singer and musician Daniel Gethin\, The Hexad Singers are formed from the choirs of St John’s College\, Cambridge\, New College\, Oxford and Madgdalen College\, Oxford.  These talented young male singers have developed an enthusiasm for ensemble singing that for many of them stemmed from their early years as choristers in churches and cathedrals around the country. \nThe individual members are much in demand with major professional groups\, having performed with renowned choirs such as The Sixteen\, Tenebrae\, and Ex Cathedra\, as well as vocal consorts such as The Gesualdo Six.

SUMMARY:Peter Donohoe plays Mozart
DESCRIPTION:Elgar – Serenade for Strings\nMozart – Piano Concerto no27\nElgar – Introduction and Allegro\nMozart – Symphony no31 ‘Paris’ \nPeter Donohoe – piano/director \nA perfect successor to Eine kleine Nachtmusik\, Elgar’s Serenade for Strings is also the perfect complement to the earlier composer’s lucid way with orchestration. Add in some woodwind and you also have the perfect backing for Peter Donohoe’s thoughtful interpretation of this\, Mozart’s last – somewhat melancholic – piano concerto (its first performance being the composer’s last public appearance). But then mix in some clarinets\, trumpets and timpani and we have the twenty-two-year-old Mozart at his most vigorous – as is Elgar’s stirring Introduction and Allegro for string quartet and string orchestra: again glancing backwards to become one of the greatest concerto grossos ever composed.

SUMMARY:Tai Murray plays Mendelssohn
DESCRIPTION:Mozart – Overture to The Marriage of Figaro\nMendelssohn – Violin Concerto in E minor\nMendelssohn – String Sinfonia no6 in Eb\nMozart – Symphony no25 \nJulian Lloyd Webber – conductor\nTai Murray – violin \nA wonderful opportunity to compare the relatively youthful and mature works of two of the most celebrated – but sadly\, shortest-lived – musical prodigies. Before the interval\, the thirty-year-old Mozart’s overture to the first of his great trio of operatic collaborations with Lorenzo Da Ponte followed by Mendelssohn’s glorious last major work and probably his most famous\, here performed by American violinist Tai Murray who made her concert debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra when she was only nine! After\, one of the eight Sinfonias for Strings composed when Felix was just twelve (just one year away from his first violin concerto) and a symphony from precocious teenager Wolfgang – its first movement probably best known for launching Miloš Forman’s hit movie Amadeus.
