SUMMARY:Patrick Hemmerle Piano Recital
DESCRIPTION:There is much sense of fantasy in the wonderful music being played by the much-acclaimed French pianist Patrick Hemmerle. His programme comprises Bach’s virtuosic Prelude (Fantasy) in A minor BWV 922; Schumann’s dramatic and powerful Kreisleriana; the second of Chopin’s four beautiful Ballades; the first of Liszt’s ever popular Mephisto Waltzes; and Ravel’s dark and atmospheric Gaspard de la Nuit. \nPatrick is now based in Cambridge and is the Musician-in-Residence at Clare Hall\, Cambridge University. He studied at the Versailles Conservatoire\, the Glasgow Royal Academy of Music and Drama\, the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris and the Conservatoire of Rueil under the tutelage of distinguished musicians and he has won a number of prestigious prizes. His career as concert pianist has led him to play in many festivals. Among the most important are the festivals of La Roque d’Anthéron and Bagatelle in France and the festival of French music in Venice. SUMMARY:Under the Greenwood Tree
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 31 July internationally-renowned tenor Rogers Covey-Crump joins the Windsor Box&Fir Co for Under the Greenwood Tree\, music from 18th century England including Shakespeare settings and other popular songs from the theatre and pleasure gardens of the day.  It’s the final concert in this new series at the wonderfully historic and atmospheric Old Baptist Chapel in Tewkesbury\, recently reopened after renovation – after one of the concerts an audience member said “thank you so much for organising such a lovely lovely gem of a concert – it was a joy in the middle of a lovely summer afternoon to come to such a beautiful space and just be able to be completely absorbed in words and music – for a couple of hours – what a treat – the sort of concert that I will remember as “right” right music\, right space \, right time!”. \nThe members of the Windsor Box&Fir Co – Jenny Thomas (flute & recorder)\, Michael Sanderson (baritone & violin)\, Ian Gammie (bass viol & guitar) and Katharine May (harpsichord) are joined by tenor Rogers Covey-Crump for a programme of songs and dances from the pleasure gardens of 18th century England.  As a member of the world-famous Hilliard Ensemble\, Rogers Covey-Crump appeared all over the world.  His performance as Evangelist in the great Bach Passion settings is renowned. He has been a member of many early music groups\, and has a vast discography.

The opening event of our week-long Summer Residency\, this is an opportunity for our residency tutors to show how it’s done. Our tutors spend their lives playing chamber music\, often in their established string quartets and trios. Here they join together in new combinations to play a programme bookended by youthful and late trios by Schubert. DESCRIPTION:THE BORDER WAITES \nDavid Hatcher – Frances Eustace – Emily White – Richard Thomas \nShipwreck! \nThe story of the chance meeting between Philip the Handsome (Duke of Burgundy\, King of Castile and Archduke of Austria)\, shipwrecked on the English coast with most of his court and Joanna the Mad\, his queen – and King Henry VII.  On a large variety of instruments of the day\, including shawm\, viol\, recorder\, crumhorn\, harp\, pipe & tabor\, The Border Waites perform music that was known to Henry and Philip. The programme is interspersed with readings and comments\, describing the life of a musician of the court\, observing the events of that fortuitous meeting and how the vicissitudes of medieval international travel are surprisingly relevant today! \n
