SUMMARY:Harpsichord Recital
DESCRIPTION:May 2017 marks the 350th anniversary of the death of Johann Jacob Froberger\, a German composer\, organist\, and harpsichordist whose keyboard works are widely acknowledged to be among the richest of the early Baroque era and whose music strongly influenced composers that followed. He was the first German harpsichord composer of real significance and his music represents a fusion of French\, Italian\, and other styles with the more formal German style. He is credited with having played a major part in the development of the Baroque suite. \nThe internationally-acclaimed harpsichordist and musicologist David Ponsford will not only play a marvellous programme of works celebrating ‘Froberger and his Legacy’\, to include works by Froberger\, Frescobaldi\, Couperin\, Buxtehude and JS Bach\, but will expertly introduce the pieces and give historical context. \n‘A kaleidoscope of musical sound which combines virtuoso brilliance with scholarship.’     Musical Opinion \nTickets from Leominster TIC 01568 616460

SUMMARY:St Matthew Passion
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 11 April at 7 pm\, the choir of Hereford Cathedral\, together with an international line-up of soloists and period-instrument orchestra Marches Baroque\, will be singing J S Bach’s St Matthew Passion. \nThe performance of one of Bach’s Passions has become a regular feature of Holy Week at Hereford Cathedral\, with the cathedral choir singing the St John Passion and the St Matthew Passion in alternate years. Geraint Bowen\, the director of music at the cathedral\, said ‘It is always exciting to re-visit these extraordinary works\, which never lose their power to move audiences.’ \nHe added\, ‘In the course of the St Matthew Passion the choir has to adopt a number of different guises\, one moment singing a tender chorale\, the next portraying a baying mob calling for Christ’s crucifixion.’ \nThe role of the Evangelist will be taken by Ruairi Bowen\, a former pupil of Hereford Cathedral School and former chorister of St Paul’s Cathedral\, while Christus will be sung by Greg Skidmore. \nThe other soloists will be soprano Natalie Clifton-Griffith\, countertenor Alex Chance\, tenor Peter Davoren and bass Nicholas Morton.

SUMMARY:AN EVENING with the BERESFORD HAMMOND HUME TRIO and THE PEREGRINE QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:The Beresford Hammond Hume improvising trio consisting of Charlie Beresford (voice/acoustic guitar)\, Sonia Hammond (cello) and Carolyn Hume (piano) perform music on the theme of ‘The Lightning Bell” their critically acclaimed album of the same name.  This music contains an eclectic mix of musical styles and song forms that create a film-like beauty and unique atmosphere. \nCharlie\, Sonia and Carolyn have\, in various forms\, performed nationally and internationally. Over the years their work has featured on BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction and receives airplay internationally on a regular basis.\nhttps://the52nd.bandcamp.com/album/the-lightning-bell \nThe Peregrine String Quartet\, led by Sonia Hammond and Justin Lingard\, is a group of four professional musicians who have returned to live and work amidst the beauty of the Welsh hills. \nAll the members of the quartet have learned from and played alongside some of the great string players of the 20th century and their concerts are designed to inspire and stimulate audiences with the freshness of their approach. In the spirit of that approach they will be performing Steve Reich’s 1988 piece ‘Different Trains’. Its original release was performed by the Kronos Quartet and won a Grammy Award in 1989 for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. This will be rare chance to see this moving piece performed in such a wonderful setting. \n

SUMMARY:Concerts for Craswall
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday March 18th\, Concerts for Craswall are presenting local young tenor Ruairi Bowen and pianist Alex Stobbs.  The recital entitled Themes of Innocence and Experience is based on a programme of Anglo-Welsh song and will use wildlife and the natural world as a vehicle for exploring the terms\, whilst also recognising the impact of military and cultural warfare. \nInnocence will be represented by the energy of nature in Richard Rodney Bennett’s The Aviary\, followed by Caneuon y Tri Aderyn (The Songs of The Three Birds) by the Welsh composer Dilys Elwyn-Edwards. \nExperience will be represented through Ivor Gurney’s settings of the war poet Edward Thomas\, and will finish with Michael Tippett’s cantata Boyhood’s End\, written for Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears. \nRuairi is a local lad\, son of Geraint Bowen and his wife Lucy. Geraint is the organist at Hereford Cathedral and many of you will have heard Lucy singing the soprano solos in concerts there. \nAccompanying Ruairi will be the equally talented young pianist Alex Stobbs\, who met Ruairi when they were both singing in the King’s College Choir at Cambridge. \nThey are both very talented young musicians\, busy making successful careers for themselves\, and will delight with this programme of heartfelt music.

SUMMARY:Virginia Black Piano Recital

She is playing a Mozart programme which includes four piano sonatas – K333\, K457\, K332 and K310. The concert is on SATURDAY MARCH 4th at 7.30 pm and not on our usual Sunday afternoons. She has played at many international festivals\, including the Göttingen and Carmel Bach festivals\, and the Herne and York early music festivals. She has pursued a worldwide concert schedule including the Paris Festival d’Été\, the Prague Spring Festival and a series of recitals in the United States. \n  \nVirginia has continued to nurture many talented musicians at the Royal Academy as professor of harpsichord\, chair of postgraduate diploma studies and senior postgraduate tutor. She has also given numerous external master classes and performance classes including Oxford University\, Eton College and the Ivy League Universities. \nIn addition to live performances\, she has made many recordings for both radio and television around the world and in England has been featured as ‘Artist of the Week’ on BBC Radio 3. Her library of CD recordings has been recognised through Editor’s Choice in The Gramophone and Critic’s Choice in Classic CD. \nVirginia is rediscovering her roots as a pianist\, with recent recitals in England and Europe of baroque and classical masterworks. In September 2012\, at the David Josefowitz Recital Hall\, London\, she gave the World Premiere performance of ‘The calm\, the storm’ a piano piece specially written for her by Oliver Davis. \nIn December 2013 she released a double CD of the six Bach Partitas (BWV 825–830) played on the piano and is currently recording a series of Scarlatti Sonatas. \n·         “Virginia Black’s command of her instrument is total; she plays as though she belongs naturally to her instrument” \nThe Guardian \n                                                            ******************** \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n
