SUMMARY:Coull Quartet in Leominster
DESCRIPTION:The celebrated Coull Quartet will be playing a mixed programme starting with a sublime string quartet by Mozart (K589)\, one of the so-called ‘Prussian Quartets’\, written for and dedicated to the King of Prussia\, himself an amateur cellist. This will be followed by the première of a powerful work by the much-respected composer and arranger Derek Smith\, his Fifth Quartet\, which was written in contemplation of human suffering and is especially fitting for Remembrance Sunday. The third piece is Puccini’s Crisantemi (Chrysanthemums – the traditional Italian flower of mourning). This short work\, only six minutes in length\, is a supremely beautiful elegy. The concert will finish with Dvorak’s much-loved ‘American’ Quartet\, a radiant work composed during the composer’s stay in America\, which conveys his impressions of that great country together with touches of nostalgia for his native Bohemia. \nTickets from Hereford Courtyard on 01432 340555 or online and from Leominster TIC on 01568 616460 – pre-booking advised.

SUMMARY:Piano Recital at Hellens
DESCRIPTION:The internationally acclaimed British pianist Mark Bebbington will play a marvellous mixed programme featuring some of the best loved works in the piano repertoire.\n  \nScarlatti            Sonatas in D major (L14) and B minor (L33)\nSchubert            Sonata in A D664\nIreland             Sarnia: An Island Sequence\nDerek Smith            Sonatine (première)\nDebussy            La Cathédrale engloutie (from Preludes Book I)\nDebussy            Feux d’artifice (from Preludes Book II) \nChopin             Nocturne in B flat minor Op 9 No 1\nChopin             Ballade No 1 in G minor Op 23 \nIn this recital\, one of Schubert’s most loved piano works is prefaced by two short sonatas by the prolific and richly inventive Baroque composer Domenico Scarlatti. The first half ends with John Ireland’s impressionistic Sarnia (the Roman name for Guernsey). After the interval\, an intriguing new work by the highly respected Malvern composer Derek Smith is followed by two of Debussy’s famous preludes\, one inspired by the Breton tale of a submerged cathedral rising from the sea and sinking back into its depths and the second representing a display of fireworks. The recital ends with Chopin’s utterly gentle B flat minor nocturne and his beautiful and emotionally charged Ballade No 1.  Tickets at £15 (students £7.50) from Hereford Courtyard Box Office 01432 340555 or online at www.courtyard.org.uk

SUMMARY:50th Anniversary Concert - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Since its formation in 2000 the group has performed the complete piano quartets of Brahms\, Dvorák\, Fauré and Mozart. It also takes a keen interest in performing gems that are not so often heard in the concert hall by the likes of Frank Bridge\, Arthur Bliss and Richard Strauss. Recent concerts have been at the Buxton and the Paxton Festivals and future engagements include the Orpheus & Bacchus Festival in Bordeaux\, the Oxford Chamber Music Society and Sevenoaks Music Club amongst others\n\n\nAn ex-sprinter and half the size of her double bass\, Chi-chi Nwanoku has gained a reputation as one of the finest exponents of her instrument today. She is a founder member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment where she held the position of Principal double bass for 30 years. She is Professor of Double Bass Historical Studies at the Royal Academy of Music\, where she was made a Fellow in 1998. In 2015 she established the Chineke! SUMMARY:Harpsichord Recital
DESCRIPTION:May 2017 marks the 350th anniversary of the death of Johann Jacob Froberger\, a German composer\, organist\, and harpsichordist whose keyboard works are widely acknowledged to be among the richest of the early Baroque era and whose music strongly influenced composers that followed. He was the first German harpsichord composer of real significance and his music represents a fusion of French\, Italian\, and other styles with the more formal German style. He is credited with having played a major part in the development of the Baroque suite. \nThe internationally-acclaimed harpsichordist and musicologist David Ponsford will not only play a marvellous programme of works celebrating ‘Froberger and his Legacy’\, to include works by Froberger\, Frescobaldi\, Couperin\, Buxtehude and JS Bach\, but will expertly introduce the pieces and give historical context. \n‘A kaleidoscope of musical sound which combines virtuoso brilliance with scholarship.’     Musical Opinion \nTickets from Leominster TIC 01568 616460

SUMMARY:St Matthew Passion
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 11 April at 7 pm\, the choir of Hereford Cathedral\, together with an international line-up of soloists and period-instrument orchestra Marches Baroque\, will be singing J S Bach’s St Matthew Passion. \nThe performance of one of Bach’s Passions has become a regular feature of Holy Week at Hereford Cathedral\, with the cathedral choir singing the St John Passion and the St Matthew Passion in alternate years. Geraint Bowen\, the director of music at the cathedral\, said ‘It is always exciting to re-visit these extraordinary works\, which never lose their power to move audiences.’ \nHe added\, ‘In the course of the St Matthew Passion the choir has to adopt a number of different guises\, one moment singing a tender chorale\, the next portraying a baying mob calling for Christ’s crucifixion.’ \nThe role of the Evangelist will be taken by Ruairi Bowen\, a former pupil of Hereford Cathedral School and former chorister of St Paul’s Cathedral\, while Christus will be sung by Greg Skidmore. \nThe other soloists will be soprano Natalie Clifton-Griffith\, countertenor Alex Chance\, tenor Peter Davoren and bass Nicholas Morton.

SUMMARY:AN EVENING with the BERESFORD HAMMOND HUME TRIO and THE PEREGRINE QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:The Beresford Hammond Hume improvising trio consisting of Charlie Beresford (voice/acoustic guitar)\, Sonia Hammond (cello) and Carolyn Hume (piano) perform music on the theme of ‘The Lightning Bell” their critically acclaimed album of the same name.  This music contains an eclectic mix of musical styles and song forms that create a film-like beauty and unique atmosphere. \nCharlie\, Sonia and Carolyn have\, in various forms\, performed nationally and internationally. Over the years their work has featured on BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction and receives airplay internationally on a regular basis.\nhttps://the52nd.bandcamp.com/album/the-lightning-bell \nThe Peregrine String Quartet\, led by Sonia Hammond and Justin Lingard\, is a group of four professional musicians who have returned to live and work amidst the beauty of the Welsh hills. \nAll the members of the quartet have learned from and played alongside some of the great string players of the 20th century and their concerts are designed to inspire and stimulate audiences with the freshness of their approach. In the spirit of that approach they will be performing Steve Reich’s 1988 piece ‘Different Trains’. Its original release was performed by the Kronos Quartet and won a Grammy Award in 1989 for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. This will be rare chance to see this moving piece performed in such a wonderful setting. \n
