Coull Quartet in Leominster

The celebrated Coull Quartet will be playing a mixed programme starting with a sublime string quartet by Mozart (K589), one of the so-called ‘Prussian Quartets’, written for and dedicated to the King of Prussia, himself an amateur cellist. This will be followed by the première of a powerful work by the much-respected composer and arranger Derek Smith, his Fifth Quartet, which was written in contemplation of human suffering and is especially fitting for Remembrance Sunday. The third piece is Puccini’s Crisantemi (Chrysanthemums – the traditional Italian flower of mourning). This short work, only six minutes in length, is a supremely beautiful elegy. The concert will finish with Dvorak’s much-loved ‘American’ Quartet, a radiant work composed during the composer’s stay in America, which conveys his impressions of that great country together with touches of nostalgia for his native Bohemia.
